Model-based approach to describe G-CSF effects in carboplatin-treated cancer patients.

2013

Granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF) is often used in cancer patients receiving cytotoxic drugs to prevent or reduce high grade neutropenia. We propose a pharmacokinetic/pharmacodynamic model to describe myelotoxicity in both G-CSF treated and non-treated patients that shall increase our understanding of G-CSF effects. The model was built from absolute neutrophil counts (ANC) obtained in 375 carboplatin-treated patients, 47 of whom received G-CSF. It includes some prior information on G-CSF taken from the literature. Simulations were performed to understand differences in G-CSF effects and explore the impact of G-CSF formulation. Our model well described the data in all patients. M…

Additive noise and multiplicative bias as disclosure limitation techniques for continuous microdata: A simulation study

2004

This paper focuses on a combination of two disclosure limitation techniques, additive noise and multiplicative bias, and studies their efficacy in protecting confidentiality of continuous microdata. A Bayesian intruder model is extensively simulated in order to assess the performance of these disclosure limitation techniques as a function of key parameters like the variability amongst profiles in the original data, the amount of users prior information, the amount of bias and noise introduced in the data. The results of the simulation offer insight into the degree of vulnerability of data on continuous random variables and suggests some guidelines for effective protection measures.

Network reconstruction for trans acting genetic loci using multi-omics data and prior information.

2022

Background: Molecular measurements of the genome, the transcriptome, and the epigenome, often termed multi-omics data, provide an in-depth view on biological systems and their integration is crucial for gaining insights in complex regulatory processes. These data can be used to explain disease related genetic variants by linking them to intermediate molecular traits (quantitative trait loci, QTL). Molecular networks regulating cellular processes leave footprints in QTL results as so-called trans-QTL hotspots. Reconstructing these networks is a complex endeavor and use of biological prior information can improve network inference. However, previous efforts were limited in the types of priors…

A Bayesian approach to assess data from radionuclide activity analyses in environmental samples

2007

A Bayesian statistical approach is introduced to assess experimental data from the analyses of radionuclide activity concentration in environmental samples (low activities). A theoretical model has been developed that allows the use of known prior information about the value of the measurand (activity), together with the experimental value determined through the measurement. The model has been applied to data of the Inter-laboratory Proficiency Test organised periodically among Spanish environmental radioactivity laboratories that are producing the radiochemical results for the Spanish radioactive monitoring network. A global improvement of laboratories performance is produced when this pri…

DECENTRALIZED SUBSPACE PROJECTION IN LARGE NETWORKS

2018

A great number of applications in wireless sensor networks involve projecting a vector of observations onto a subspace dictated by prior information. Accomplishing such a task in a centralized fashion entails great power consumption, congestion at certain nodes, and suffers from robustness issues. A sensible alternative is to compute such projections in a decentralized fashion. To this end, recent works proposed schemes based on graph filters, which compute projections exactly with a finite number of local exchanges among sensor nodes. However, existing methods to obtain these filters are confined to reduced families of projection matrices or small networks. This paper proposes a method tha…

Reduction in site fidelity with smaller spatial scale may suggest scale-dependent information use

2014

Animals change the strategy that they use to select breeding sites at the spatial scales of habitat, patch, and microhabitat. In this regard, breeding site fidelity is expected to vary according to environmental predictability, which, in turn, is expected to differ between each spatial scale. However, whether or not animals change their degree of site fidelity at different spatial scales remains unclear. We captured and released males of the terrestrial frog Pseudophryne bibronii into alternative patches within a breeding habitat and determined the extent to which site fidelity influenced individual nest-site choice. We found that males tended to return to their original patch rather than r…

Behavioural aspects of patients with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) that affect their dental management

2013

Dental treatment in patients with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) can be complicated due to the presence of behavioral alterations. In this group, there are no specific behavioral profiles that allow dentist to anticipate the attitude that a patient will show during a visit. Thus, behavioral attitudes have been described that vary from total permissiveness and collaboration during even bloody procedures, to the absolute impossibility in conducting a simple oral examination. There is no effective behavioral management technique for all ASD patients. Prior information, such as the type of ASD or the presence of certain concurrent pathologies can help predict the patient’s likely behavior. The…
